About IB English Literature & Performance SL

IB English Literature and Performance SL is designed for students with a strong foundation in English and a keen interest in the dynamic intersection of literary analysis and theatrical expression.

As part of Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature, this innovative course integrates the critical study of literature with the practical exploration of performance. It cultivates a dual skill set: close reading and textual analysis of literary works, alongside an understanding of how these works are transformed and brought to life on stage or through other performance media. The course emphasizes the dynamic relationship between page and stage, exploring how meaning is constructed both through the author’s text and the performer’s interpretation.

Students learn by deconstructing literary texts—with a special focus on drama—as well as novels, poems, and non-literary performance texts, and by engaging in the practical process of adapting and performing them. The course prioritizes the development of both a formal, analytical voice for written tasks and a creative, conceptual voice for performance, culminating in the transformative Portfolio of the Process.

What You Will Learn

At IB English Literature and Performance SL, students explore:

  • Literary and Performance Analysis — deconstructing literary texts and live or recorded performances to understand dramatic structure, directorial choices, staging, and actor interpretation.

  • The Text in Performance Context — examining how performative works are shaped by their cultural and historical settings, and how different productions can alter a text’s meaning and impact.

  • Adaptation and Transformation — understanding the creative process of transforming a literary text from page to stage, analyzing how meaning shifts across different mediums and genres.

  • Practical Performance Exploration — developing skills in staging, dramaturgy, and vocal/physical expression to interpret and realize texts through live performance.

  • Global Issues Through Multiple Lenses — connecting literary works and their performances to broader human experiences across cultures, evaluating how both text and performance reflect, represent, or critique the world.

Core components &
Guiding concepts

The IB English Literature and Performance SL syllabus is structured around a unique framework that integrates literary study with practical performance exploration, guided by central concepts that frame our analysis of both text and stage.

Core Components:

  1. The Critical Study of Literature: Students engage with a diverse range of literary texts, developing skills in close reading and analysis to understand how literary form, structure, and technique create meaning.

  2. The Exploration of Performance: Students investigate the theories and practices of transforming texts into performance, examining the roles of the director, performer, and designer in shaping meaning for an audience.

  3. The Portfolio of the Process (PoP): This practical component requires students to reflect on their own transformative process, documenting the journey of adapting a literary text into a performance piece and analyzing the artistic choices made.

Guiding Concepts:
Our integrated analysis is driven by key concepts such as Transformation, Adaptation, Perspective, Identity, Culture, and Representation. These lenses allow us to ask profound questions about how meaning is constructed, communicated, and re-interpreted as it moves from the page to the stage and is experienced by an audience.

It taught me how to think like both a critic and a director
"I chose Literature & Performance because I love both analyzing texts and being on stage, but I wasn't sure how to connect the two. The online tutoring sessions were a revelation. My tutor was just as skilled at breaking down a complex play as they were at guiding me through my solo performance. The feedback on my Portfolio of the Process was invaluable—it helped me articulate the 'why' behind every directorial choice I made. This course didn't just teach me how to write an essay; it taught me how to think like both a critic and a director, and the online format made sharing and discussing performance videos incredibly easy."

Rated 5 out of 5
"The IB English Literature & Performance course is uniquely challenging, and the online tutoring I received was essential to my success. The tutors provided a perfect balance of rigorous literary analysis and creative, practical support. They helped me uncover layers of meaning in the texts that I would have missed on my own, and then gave me the confidence to reinterpret those meanings through performance. Preparing for the solo performance was daunting, but the mock sessions and constructive feedback made me feel prepared and inspired. This unique program solidified my desire to pursue theatre in university, and the skills I gained—both analytical and creative—are exactly what my professors are looking for."
